Open coil or spring coil mattresses are the traditional form of mattress that people are used to purchasing and sleeping on. And despite the many different varieties of mattresses and mattress technologies available today, spring coil remains the most popular mattress on the market. Part of the reason for this is of course the price. Some of the more advanced and comfort focused technologies such as the memory foam used in a orthopedic mattress are significantly more expensive than a spring coil mattress and not everyone necessarily wants to pay more than they need to.
And there is no need to. If there were not any good, they would not still be the most widely produced and most popular mattress. They can be bought in a variety of sizes – king, double, and single being the most common sizes. You can also get them in a variety of thicknesses.
So what is inside a spring coil mattress? Well there are the springs of course, hundreds of them. There can be three hundred and twenty five spring coils in the mattress standing at six coils high. The coils are each connected to one another via a piece of wire. And for strength and support across the entire range of coils there is a rod attached to the top and bottom of the edges of the coil. Further strength can be created by using thicker wire, varying the number of twists and varying the number of springs used in the mattress in specific areas. Then the filling is added. There can be a variety of filling used in a spring coil mattress. And it is then finished off by being encased in a strong cotton fabric called ticking.
It should also be mentioned out of wanting to be complete that there are two types of spring coil mattresses. There is open coil mattress as described above and continuous coil mattress. The difference with continuous coil mattress is that it consists of a single piece of wire stitched together to form a spring shape and set out in a number of rows. As with open coil mattresses, the level of strength and support can be increased by the use of a broader wire.
As mentioned, spring coil mattresses are the most popular and cheapest form of mattress on the market. But if you suffer from back pain, it would perhaps be better to look for getting an orthopedic mattress made from memory foam or latex foam, rather than a spring coil mattress, as spring coil mattresses lack the ability of memory foam for example to mold and contour around the body to provide superior comfort and support and reduce the application of pressure to pressure points in the body, hence creating the orthopedic advantage.
