Orthopedic Pillow

Memory foam orthopedic pillows may be desired whether you have any orthopedic issues or not, just as is the case with an orthopedic mattress, because of the level of support offered by memory foam.

A pillow is an essential sleeping item to help ensure your head and skeleton is adequately supported and correctly aligned while resting.

Like with a mattress, pillows lose their support ability after a while. And as it is with mattresses, people often do not even realise when their pillow is spent and its ime to change it. Here is a very simple test that absolutely says that your pillow is past its sell by date – fold it in two. If it does not spring back out when you let it go, then that pillow needs to be replaced pronto. That is to say, if you fold your pillow in two and the top half simply sits on the bottom half after you release the pillow, then it has lost its cushioning properties and therefore no longer provides the support that your head, neck and spine should be receiving.

You could replace the pillow with another ordinary pillow, these are typically made from a compressible sponge like filling such as polyester, or for acquired tastes in feathered down form. The latter of course is ruled out for anyone suffering from allergies related to bird down and in any case will vary depending on what type of bird those feathers are coming from. Some people also do not like the way that a feather filled pillow will flatten out and feel hard when resting upon it. A compressible foam pillow may only last a year or two before losing enough of its self recovery properties to make it redundant. Sometimes these pillows do not recover well after washing them either although that is more of an issue with feathered pillows, both due to the nature of them being made with feathers as fillers and to them being more expensive than cheap to replace compressible sponge / polyester pillows.

So how about a memory foam orthopedic mattress for taking care of the above disadvantages and ensuring your head, neck and spine truly gets the support that it needs. Well if you have read What is Memory Foam then you’ll know about what memory foam and how it works – shaping itself in response to heat and pressure to provide adequate support, and its ability to recover its original shape after use.

They also come in two shapes, the traditional pillow shape, and a contoured shape to – the manufacturer’s feel, better support your head, neck and spine by being more ergomically designed to accomodate your head and neck as your rest those parts of your body upon it. Of course, gor the manufacturer’s “trouble” of designing these specially shaped pillows, you can expect to pay more for these styles than an ordinary pillow shaped orthopedic memory foam pillow.

You may also get latex foam pillows – some people do not like the initial chemical smell that memory foam gives off and prefer something that comes from a natural source. Indeec latex is sourced from trees. Like memory foam orthopedic pillows, they are hypoallergenic. They are also usually perforated for ventilation purposes and have a more spongier feel to them than memory foam pillows, which some people prefer to memory foam mattress. Memory foam however is the more popular of the two, especially when it comes to purchasing an orthopedic mattress.
